A man in jail in Tennessee is awaiting extradition to Arizona, where prosecutors plan to file first-degree murder charges against him for the killing of Mercedes Vega, a young woman from Tempe who was found burned alive in the desert west of the Valley last year.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 22-year-old Sencere Hayes last week.
Officials say this is the first of several arrests expected in this case.
Vega was not only murdered but tortured before she was found burning in a car off the Interstate 10 freeway near Tonopah on April 17, 2023.
Three years before Vega was murdered, Cudjoe Young was charged and arrested for robbery after Vega picked him out in a photo lineup.
We have learned Young and Hayes are both from Chattanooga.
“Will we ever find out exactly what 100% happened? Maybe we will, maybe we won’t,” said Vega’s stepfather, Tom Pillsbury.
Vega’s family tells us they know the road to justice is just beginning, with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirming more arrests are coming.
