Man charged with performing lewd act on himself in GP surgery claims he was ‘alleviating pain’

A man in his 40s has appeared in court accused of masturbating in the public waiting room of a doctor’s surgery in the midlands.
Abdulasiis Ismail, Room 201, Great Western Hotel, Frenchvill Lane, Galway appeared at a sitting of Athlone District Court following an incident at Newtown Medical Centre, Newtown Terrace, Athlone, Co Westmeath on August 7 this year.
The 41-year-old was arrested after gardaí were called to the scene shortly after 3pm, the court was told.

Sgt Sandra Keane, for the prosecution, said Ismail was later charged with engaging in an act of masturbation under section 45 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017 and public intoxication.
She said it will be the State’s case Ismail entered the medical centre before laying down on a chair in the public waiting room.
Sgt Keane said it will be alleged Ismail, at that stage, opened his belt and pants where he “touched himself” in a sexual manner and masturbated.
