Two men who drowned in the Salt River on Sept.18 were cousins from Afghanistan who came to the United States to escape the Taliban after assisting the U.S. military with intelligence efforts.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of distress in the water around 5:30 p.m. that day. When they arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on Nasri, who was pronounced dead shortly after. Khaliqi's body was found three days later, after a search involving airboats and divers.
