Fat niggers + $20 unlimited skrimps = huge operating loss of about $11 million for Red Lobster
Red Lobster offered customers all-you-can-eat shrimp. That was a mistake
The beloved yet beleaguered pillar of casual dining abruptly shuttered dozens of locations this week, heightening speculation that the chain is
careening toward bankruptcy.
Although its dire financial situation isn’t the result of a single misstep, executives at the company that owns a large stake in the chain, as well as industry experts, said that miscalculations over the popularity of the
all-you-can-eat shrimp special accelerated the company’s downward spiral.
In an effort to boost foot traffic and ease the sales slump that swept through the restaurant industry during the pandemic, Red Lobster executives last year decided to relaunch a popular marketing ploy from years past to lure customers: For $20 they could
eat as much shrimp as they wanted.
Eager for a deal during an era of high inflation, many consumers eagerly embraced the offer as a challenge. People took to TikTok to brag about how many of the pink morsels they could put down in a sitting —
one woman boasted she’d consumed 108 shrimp over the course of a 4-hour meal.
During a presentation about sales from the third quarter of last year, Ludovic Garnier, the chief financial officer of Thai Union Group, a seafood conglomerate that has been Red Lobster’s largest shareholder since 2020,
cited the endless shrimp deal as a key reason the chain had an operating loss of about $11 million during that time frame.

A Red Lobster customer says that they ordered 10 plates of shrimp as part of the chain’s all-you-can-eat promotion. In a viral TikTok clip, they recorded their server bringing out several different platters of bottomless cooked crustaceans to their table.
Liece (@lieceliece35) may’ve gotten on the employee’s nerves, as many viewers thought after they saw the employee drop plates in front of her on the table, insinuating that the server was fed up with her never-ending desire to consume isopods.
“Endless shrimp at red lobster (I had 10 plates),” a text overlay in the video reads as the Red Lobster server brought out plate after plate of the chain’s endless shrimp promotion. The sound appended to the video is of someone saying, “Another one, thank you,” which is repeated every time a new plate appears on the screen.

“As someone that worked at Red Lobster as a server receiving a guest that ordered unlimited shrimp, fuck you. You are cheap; you didn’t get my extras up, and you’re fucking worrisome,” James said.
The Daily Dot has reached out to James via TikTok comment and Red Lobster via email.
Folks who worked in the food service industry concurred with James’ assessment of all-you-can-eat customers, with some alleging they were generally poor tippers.
@serans_ said, “It’s like the people at Olive Garden who only get soup and salad an get 10 refills just just to tip $2 for 2+ hours of service it was horrible.”

A user on TikTok is calling out Red Lobster after alleging that he was monitored and made to feel “uncomfortable” on a recent trip to Red Lobster.
In a video with over 162,000 views as of Saturday, TikTok user Marlin (@facen4ward) describes what he says was “one of the worst experiences I’ve had at a restaurant in a long time.”
“We thought we would get out as a family and enjoy a meal together,” Marlin writes in the caption. “It was just the opposite.”
According to Marlin, he visited Red Lobster with his family and ordered two endless shrimp meals and two kids’ meals for his family of six. The plan, he says, was to share the food, something he says is common in his family.
“We were told that if we were caught sharing the meals with our family with our kids, they would charge us for more endless shrimps,” he explains. Later, he adds, “The manager was walking around trying to be friendly, but she was actually policing us looking to see if we were sharing food.”
