The US Coast Guard on Wednesday morning said rescue teams have found one body in their search for 39 people reported missing after a boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean between the Bahamas and Florida in what is being called a human smuggling attempt gone awry.
The assumed asylum seekers are feared dead after their boat capsized in stormy seas off en route from the Bahamas, about 300 miles from the US coast.
According to the agency, they were alerted to the tragedy on Tuesday morning after a man believed to be the only survivor of the shipwreck was spotted clinging to the submerged hull of the vessel, 45 miles (72km) east of Fort Pierce.
According to the United Nations, “the number of Haitians who have tried to migrate via unofficial channels to neighbouring countries by boat to seek what they believe will be a better life increased dramatically in 2021, driven by economic hardship, insecurity and a recent earthquake.”
Early in January, the IOM’s project officer for the assistance of migrants, Claire Gaulin, said, people “are motivated by a number of factors, including the lack of jobs and other opportunities at home. In some cases, people have left because their property or livelihood was destroyed by the earthquake, which hit the south-west of the country in August. They all have one thing in common,” she added. “They are searching for a better future for themselves and their family.”
