A mother is charged with aggravated child abuse after authorities say she drove off knowing her preteen son was on the trunk of her car.
The incident happened in September and the charge against her was recently made public. Bessemer police Sgt. Cortice Miles said 29-year-old Quantina Brown was arrested in October and released from jail on bond.
According to Miles, the Woodstock woman drove her 12-year-old son to a relative's house in the 500 block of 36th Street North. An altercation began at the home between Brown and another relative.
Following the dispute, Miles said. Brown began driving away from the home. Her son jumped onto the trunk of the car and refused to get off. Brown then continued driving while her son was still on the trunk. Police said the mother also reportedly took a cell phone from her son before leaving the scene.
Detectives charged Brown with aggravated child abuse and fourth-degree theft of property. She was arrested Oct. 15 and released from jail the same day after posting $30,500 bond.
Her first court hearing is set for early December. "Unfortunately,'' Miles said, "this is the world that we live in and life's value to some is less than a piece of furniture in their houses."
