Van Brett Watkins, the man who mortally wounded Rae Carruth's pregnant girlfriend, has died in prison
The triggerman in a plot to kill of girlfriend of former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth has died. Van Brett Watkins was sentenced to more than 50 years behind bars for shooting and killing Cherica Adams.
Adams was pregnant with Carruth’s child in 1999 when he plotted to have her killed. She died -- but their child, Chancellor Adams survived the shooting.
Watkins passed away in prison last Sunday. Officials confirmed that he died of natural causes.

More than 24 years after Rae Carruth's plot to kill his own pregnant girlfriend unfolded in Charlotte, the triggerman involved has died in a North Carolina prison.
WCNC Charlotte reviewed digital records from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, which confirmed that Van Brett Watkins died on Dec. 3, 2023. He was 63 years old.
Watkins was sentenced to a 50-year prison term for his role in Carruth's plot to kill Cherica Adams in November 1999. Watkins shot Adams in her car as she drove away from Stonecrest Shopping Center. While Adams would eventually die of her injuries, her son Chancellor was born via emergency cesarean section.
Chancellor, now 24 years old, lives with significant disabilities tied to the shooting. He has been raised by his maternal grandmother, Saundra Adams, since his birth.
