Asherai Gadsden and Joshua Mack weren’t thinking about how hard Alan P. Johnson III worked to achieve success in school and work, how much he gave to others or that his biggest dream of becoming the type of teacher who changes children’s lives was within his reach.
They were thinking of money. Gadsden set up a date with Johnson through a social media app with the intention of robbing him the night of Jan. 8, 2022. The date for the 24-year-old Sumter man ended with him dead in Gadsden’s apartment. He was shot four times.

The night of Jan. 8, 2022, Johnson thought he was just on a date. He took Gadsden to dinner and out for drinks afterward, Zeigler said. He went into Gadsden’s apartment for a quick stop before going home, the prosecutor said. While Gadsden was in the restroom, Mack came into the apartment with a gun. Mack later told police Johnson grabbed for the gun and he fired. Gadsden waited an hour before calling 911, Zeigler said. Johnson wasn’t their first setup, the prosecutor said.
Mack’s girlfriend, Zora Henderson, pleaded guilty to reduced charges in May. Her sentencing has been deferred.
