I surmise that when the Framers wrote the constitution, they meant freedom of speech in that historical context, that in a free society, one can pretty much say everything, including dissatisfaction with the government, or political leaders. They had no idea there will be recordings of music, speech, and moving pictures. No one had a crystal ball. Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy.

Also, there were the expected norms of decency, humility, civility, and cooperation.
