We can talk all day about "I'd sooner die than," but sometimes a person doesn't realize what she's in, until it's too late to get out. Then what are you going to do, object? And have your family executed first as you watch?

I can't blame her for fleeing. With anti-Nazi hysteria, can she get a fair trial?

It's like the soccer team who resorted to cannibalism as a last, desperate act in order to stay alive another day. Some passengers preferred to die but I never judged those guys. How would I know what starvation feels like or what I would do to survive?

Or the French women who took up with German soldiers during the occupation and got severely punished when the war ended. I don't judge them either. If I were left alone with children in an occupied city, and my kids were crying with hunger, begging me for food I would have done the same thing - anything to feed them. It all comes down to survival.

Personally, I don't think this 96 year old woman, who was 18 at the time she started her secretarial job, typing up papers, filing and doing other clerical work should be prosecuted. I doubt any officers were confiding their plans to her. Hitler's personal secretary who was labeled a "youthful follower" who was misled and not responsible for the actions of Hitler, had spent years steeped in propaganda and knew little else. How would she know? The Nazis were very efficient and very good at keeping things under wraps and secret for a long time.

Of course all the young people who didn't believe in the Nazi agenda could have stood up for their principles, the way Sophie Scholl and her brother did and end up decapitated.

Besides, she's been 18 years old at the end of the war.
