I’m not really worried about the random assholes that you’re going to get no matter what. Because you can’t please everyone. Most of my customers like me. But,you’ll always get one that is just not going to like you,no matter what you do.

There's not that many tile guys who do excellent work up here, and contractors and customers are at their mercy, when it comes to showing up. I'm usually completing the electrical roughing when the tile guy is booked. The contractor always recommends picking the A-team, who in our case also sells and cuts the stone for the job. The customer on our last job picked a guy we didn't know, who had good reputation and a great quote. But his number one employee quit, leaving the customer scrambling for an alternative. My fishing buddy, a 3rd generation GC, lent us his in-house installer, for the save. I can't think of any customers we've had that looked at online reviews, but we mostly work for older folks up this way.

That's true also. Liberals don't bother picketing outside an office anymore, and they band together for online assaults. I forget the names, but the slew of "They're so racist there!" false reviews happened to a couple of prominent restaurants while Trump was president. It isn't just their problem, though, but the problem of a lot of conservatives like me who have been struggling against the encroachment of wokeness. It started getting really bad during the HNIC days. Suddenly the industry we were already in changed for the worst.

Employees are out of the question, independent sidekicks are laid on as needed. That is a necessary strategy in NY state, where you better stay under the radar, or you'll be snowed under with regulations, audits, insurance, bookkeeping, and village, town and city licensing rackets. If a job is on a permit, we just pay a local with a license to sign off on the work. Pain-in-the-ass types, like schoolteachers, who want to be able to sue, file complaints and post bad reviews, are directed to, and pay a premium price for, the contractors who go the full monty. I do work for them too, but don't deal with their customer. As far as dragging my good name through the mud, my brother's bunny boiler posts a lot worse slander than being a racist, on any and all social media, to family, friends and strangers alike.

But again, that's a luxury most people don't have. It's wrong that a lot of us have to walk on eggshells and keep opinions to ourselves, but that's how the country's become. My expertise is on the regulatory side of finance, so I know as well as anyone that there's no "under the radar" in what I do.

It's not even a matter of a person's reputation, but false reputations that are sometimes slander. For example, there's a fairly prominent economist and academic who once described me as one of the stupidest people alive. It was over something trivial, but the super-libtard made it an issue, and I was actually correct anyway. It was a long time ago, but it still shows up when someone Googles my real name. Can that affect someone's opinion of me? Maybe. If it's a liberal hiring manager when I'm looking at a new job opportunity, it almost certainly does.

Being true to yourself is not always the same as keeping your mouth shut, and pride in stating your mind doesn't put food on the table. So in the meantime most of us have to bide our time.
