How old was the hooptie it was driving?! I haven't seen a car not equipped with ABS in many years unless it was part of someone's classic collection. With older vehicles you need to rapidly tap the brakes in slippery conditions to avoid locking them up and inducing a skid, but with ABS you apply steady pressure because the anti-lock braking action is automatic (and more efficient). Hence the term, "Anti-lock Brake System". You'll feel a vibrating groan in the pedal as the ABS engages and disengages far more rapidly than a human could ever do on a slippery surface. The ABS will also activate when going fast on a dirt road and suddenly ramming down on the brake pedal. Basically, it activates whenever the car's tires loose friction and a skid begins. Tapping on ABS defeats the function and, whooosh! There you go skidding along.
