The same shit happened here a few years ago, when a dozen gang members were beating two guys to death on some black guy's front lawn. He stepped out front and fired his rifle in the air. The only thing the asshole cops did about it was arrest and prosecute him.

The neighbors said if he didn't intervene, the victims would have been killed. As it was they were badly injured. This shit was happening on his front lawn. I would likely do the same thing, under the circumstances. In a reasonable state, he'd be recognized for his actions. Our county cops just saw an easy gun arrest, end of story. No good deed goes unpunished here in NY.
