Once, I saw a reproduced engraving of a seventeenth-century stage set. The entire stage and performance were designed for optimal viewing from the chair in which Louis XIV would sit.

At Versailles, Louis XIV literally controlled everything as far as the eye could see. Manicured French gardens have been described as a controlled skin covering the Earth's surface. Like many absolute monarchs, Louis XIV also controlled the lives of every organism over which he ruled.
