Of all the BS in that movie, I think that scene was the biggest. Merchants back then weren't stupid. They had pen and paper, and they knew exactly how much food a boat could carry, therefore how many niggers to bring back. They would never have brought on excess plantation equipment, which would have to be fed for a while before being discarded.

One of the biggest slave ship owners was a man named Aaron Lopez. He was a Portuguese immigrant. Strangely enough, a lot of the slaveship owners were seafaring Portuguese merchants who immigrated to America in New England. And they did keep immaculate records of what they shipped and when. Supposedly the Lopez family still has all of the old volumes of his ship's manifests and whatnot. There's a few good books I can recommend on the history of that if you like.
