They fired the pope he replaced because he was actually a good pope. The former Pope Benedict was just too truthful and honest for the current regime I guess. And he recently pissed off the Catholic Church by telling too much truth. He blames 'cabals of homosexuals' in the church for the plague of child molestation by Priests among other things.
