An accused killer is back behind bars, after allegedly soliciting a police informant to commit murder while out on bail.

Police arrested Kevin Dvon Shammah Goodwin, 20. He is charged with one felony count of solicitation to commit murder and was booked into Gaston County Jail with a $200,000 bond.

On Sept. 13, Goodwin allegedly solicited a confidential informant of the Gastonia Police Department to commit a murder of a woman.

In July 2017, Goodwin was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of former Cherryville High School football star Richard “R.J.” Abernathy. The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after police arrived at the 1200 block of Balthis Drive at 12:24 a.m. July 17, 2017. Abernathy was the father to an infant son.

Three other men also face first-degree murder charges in the Abernathy case, as all four await trial. Goodwin had turned himself in to the police after the other three had already been arrested.

Prior to his most recent arrest on Saturday, Goodwin had been out of jail since Aug. 20, 2018, after posting $200,000 bail related to the first-degree murder charge.

Goodwin also faces a new misdemeanor charge of failure to comply with pre-trial service related to his July 2017 arrest.
