Chicago Public Schools missed or ignored troubling prior arrest records for nine out of the 72 employees accused of sexually abusing students since 2008, according to a detailed analysis by the Chicago Tribune.
In one shocking case, rapist Gerald Gaddy was allowed to volunteer as a track and field coach at Simeon Career Academy, a sports powerhouse, despite four felony convictions for drug dealing and possession and warnings from district officials not to allow him on school grounds.
Gaddy, now 46, went on to fondle, have sex with, and otherwise abuse a 16-year-old female honors student roughly 40 times over the course of the 2013-2014 school year, the girl said.
