I came across the items shown in this photograph — unfortunate and offensive racist Mammy and Pappy stereotypes being offered for sale. I carried them to the front desk and told them woman in charge that the store should not be selling items such as these. She refused to acknowledge that my point had any merit and, in fact, instructed me to put them back on the shelf where I found them if I was not going to buy them.
Had I come across these in a store in the Deep South, I would have been offended but not shocked. But to find these for sale in the Berkshires was simply astonishing. We’re better than that.

I used to have to drive through this quaint little town on the way to visit my dear old grandmother. They definitely smell their own farts there..
