Neither State Police Sgt. Trent Cuccia nor the unidentified teen was injured, though police captured the boy and booked him on a count of attempted carjacking. He was already wanted on an outstanding warrant for an unrelated burglary in New Orleans and had been reported as a runaway.
They didn’t identify the trooper or the boy, but a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case provided details about the circumstances that led Cuccia to open fire.
The 13-year-old then walked up to the vehicle, opened the driver’s door and started getting in, prompting Cuccia to fire his service weapon at the boy, the source said.
The teen then jumped back into the other car, which took off. He soon jumped out of the car and was arrested by other troopers at Green and Audubon streets, about a block from where he was fired on.
"There’s people roaming around looking to steal stuff that’s not tied down," neighborhood resident Steve Barbier told WWL-TV. "They just picked the wrong guy to try and steal the car. They picked the guy with a gun."
