The ultimate fate of a downtown mural that’s raised concerns over its lack of diversity might rest in the hands of the Canadian artist who painted it, Burlington’s city attorneys conclude in a new memo.
That’s because a federal law may complicate removal of the mural, which activists have called racist for excluding people of color from a visual narrative of Vermont's history.
At issue is the U.S. Visual Artists Rights Act, which gives an artist lifetime rights to prevent destruction of their work, even after selling a piece.
